when you support RLBC
... you give an opportunity to an anonymous community member to receive quality prenatal, continuous labor, and postpartum support from one of our doulas.
The Problem: Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) are not proportionally represented in the doula community, and low-income parents often times cannot afford doulas or are unaware that culturally competent care is available, especially from folks who reflect their lived experiences.
The Solution: When a doula is present, parents are less likely to receive interventions, less likely to use pain medications, and less likely to give birth by cesarean. Parents are also happier and more satisfied with their labor and birth experiences, and their babies are healthier (even at the 1 & 5 minute marks after birth).

- Contributing to a multi-cultural collective that offers quality support in 6+ languages
- Encouraging partnerships where clients see themselves reflected in their care provider(s)
- Advancing a sustainable profession for Black, Indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) who are doulas
- Fostering the healing of intergenerational relationships and communities
- Promoting birth support as a human right
Build Collectively
RLBC is transforming birth work in the Bay Area by moving from an individual competitive model to a collective model. We believe that in order to create lasting solutions to birth inequities on a large scale, we need to coordinate our efforts across organizations, people, and foundations and work together towards our common goals.
We believe that pairing doulas and clients based on cultural and social demographic background is a critical part of improving birth experiences and establishing trust. We know that because of systemic racism, birthing BIQTPOC experience realities such as: lack of access to quality prenatal care, poor patient treatment, and disproportionate rates of surveillance and incarceration. For reasons like these, birthing BIQTPOC are at higher risk for birth complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, and preterm birth...
RLBC is committed to building a society in which all people feel empowered, informed, and safe before, during, and after birth.

By supporting Roots of Labor Birth Collective, you are empowering us with financial security which in turn makes birth work and reproductive support accessible for all.
Where does your CONTRIBUTION go?
The Roots admin team consists of BIPOC birthworkers who volunteer their time to provide the Bay Area community with support for BIPOC families, birthworkers, and incarcerated individuals.
Here's how your donation will be well-spent:
- Supporting our (partially funded) part time staff
- Compensation for doula services for a family who cannot personally afford the support they need
- Community events hosted for local families and birthworkers
- Gas money for doulas volunteering at Santa Rita Jail to travel to and from the jail
Contributing to RLBC allows us to offer doula support to birthing people who otherwise may not have access to birth support. Thank you for believing in the ceremony and sacredness of birth.
If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] – we look forward to connecting soon!
How can I contribute?
Thank you for your support!
We believe that everyone deserves a doula.
